In 1909, tourists could take the two-and-a-half-hour ride from Knoxville to Elkmont for $1.95 each way. I camped at Elkmont Campground in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the very first day they were open for the 2016 season. You need headlamps. We love Elkmont and they'd made a lot of progress since we were there 3 yrs ago. The park is a sanctuary for a magnificent array of animal and plant life, all of which is protected for future generations to enjoy. Whether you are planning a trip for Christmas, winter solstice, or just as a chance to get away, the Smokies are a perfect winter wonderland. Poor Trail Conditions The Smokies get a lot of rain and snow during the winter months. Prices are the same whether it is an RV or tent only site. None of the tent pads are particularly far from the parking so unless mobility is really an issue, then I would not let that deter you from these sites. There are also no showers or laundry in the campground. The river is often also moving fast and flip flops easily get swept away. Sites are nicely spaced. The Big Tent is what locals call the annual Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show in Arizona. Our favorite family hikes in the Smokies are not too long nor exhausting and typically have a highlighted feature such as a waterfall, creek, or historic cabin that the kids will enjoy.
