Not-so-Good: The portapotty at the Hopewell Junction depot was disgusting and clearly had not been serviced in a very long time. The section from Old Manchester Rd to Lake Logan is now open!!! There are plenty of benches along the way for a snack and rest. Since it was paved with asphalt last year, this is a very smooth trail. Certainly a gem in an area with lots of car traffic. Todays one way mileage for that section was also about 5 miles; a great ride, and you can ride much farther (we often go as far as Whalley Lake, just not today) as the trail goes all the way to Hopewell Junction where you can pick up the Dutchess Rail Trail. The best part is the Walkway over the Hudson. It also has a trackage agreement with the Housatonic Railroad, a Connecticut freight railroad, though Metro-North says it is seldom used. Lots of gradual uphill going north which made the return trip easier. It's a lovely, well maintained trail that connects to the walkway over the hudson and the hudson valley rail trail. The best time to visit here is early morning in the fall. One of the best trails I have done. My goal was to get to Whaley Lake but will have to return when Spring temperatures permit. A real treat to ride on this brand-new trail, part of the Empire State system. Even a few hours a month will make a huge difference for the Hopewell Depot Museum. This new portion will run from Pumphouse Road in Brewster to the parking lot in Hopewell Junction for the Dutchess Rail Trail. You walk down a flight of steps, ride down Peaceable Hill Road to Rt. The path continues through the town of East Fishkill and ends in Hopewell Junction. Approaching the terminus, youll pass the Hopewell Depot. Built in 1873, this former hub on the Maybrook Line of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad now offers a museum and historical photo gallery inside. THE TRAIL IS NICELY SHADED FOR THE MOST PART WITH SOME RACERS ON THE ROAD. The incline is very gradual, so not super hard but makes for a fairly long pull either way, so keep this in mind. So, Maybrookdoesnt carry trains much anymore: Now, Metro-North uses the tracks to move equipment between its lines. The trail from end to end (18 miles) is perfectly paved with numerous bridges and parking access points scattered about all in pristine condition. Returning southbound is a little tougher since there is the slight upward grade. The trail all but completes the connection to the Putnam Trailway, which in turn connects to the North County Trailway on its way down to NYC. Beautiful!!! I lived in Poughkeepsie for 5 years in the early 2000's and I used to imagine how awesome it would be to convert some of the abandoned rail lines that criss-crossed the city and the region. It was nice with the fall color, but there is not much else to see. The Poughkeepsie walking bridge is a great bonus. Looks like a stairway is being installed at the Peaceable Hill Road overpass. As a female cyclist riding fast, I feel safe, but female runners/walkers may feel safer with a partner. A great experience at every level. If the state paves the disused Maybrook train line from Brewster to Hopewell Junction, thetwenty-two mile gap in the Empire State Trail can easily close. Great trail. This trail is well marked and is a great combination of climbing steep rocky sections and walking flat sections with decent views. After the Whaley Lake continuing south there is a slight decline which did make it a a bit of a grind on the way back but really nothing to be afraid of. The first part to Whaley Lake passes several nice ponds with some hills in the background. I was unable to find any access point to this trail in August 2015. Be aware that there are at least 2 additional parking areas/access points where the trail crosses RT 292 in Holmes (Whalay Lake - Holmes Community Center) and where it crosses Old Rt 55. I biked from Brewster to Poughkeepsie on March 12, once it finally warmed up a bit. It is wide, flat and has great shade. Okay, I road the whole trail, but on 2 days separated by a month. I recommend this. Beautiful trail, clean and well kept and super clean bathrooms in Hopewell Junction. Basically brand new, uncrowded, lots of interesting sights along the way including multiple water views and lots of greenery. At the North end by Page Lumber you can see the bridge abuttments going up. Events.
